Enhancing safety with Toyota’s Forklift Simulator
Using simulations to train your workforce has a lot of benefits. Drivers can learn by mistake as there is no risk for injuries. The trainees are more engaged due to the immersive nature of virtual reality.
VR was the perfect solution for the job! Creating a full immersive experience to engage drivers in a fun and pleasant way.
To best show all the benefits VR has to offer for safety training we created a VR simulator by using intuitive 360° virtual reality headgear and realistic drivers’ seats allowing workers to hone their skills without using expensive real world equipment.
Lowering the cost of expensive operator training, reducing the risk of accidents in the workplace and a high customer retention are the key benefits of using VR for safety training.
The simulator is built to resemble an original and ergonomic Toyota forklift driver compartment to maximize comfort for the trainee while offering him a real-life experience.
The simulator consists of original Toyota driver compartment parts (seat, steering wheel, pedals, hydraulic controls, signal controllers), a virtual environment, and a VR headset. The sense of presence is one of the most essential features of VR training.
Five different scenarios were developed according to the operator training requirements guidelines. A student forklift operator can learn basic driving skills or more complex ones through these scenarios. The scenarios include:
- An introduction
- An introductory driving course
- A mix of more complicated driving tasks involving stacking and pallet handling
